Let's Get Down to Bedness

I have a question for you guys- it's about beds and bedding. Now, I know that everyone had different upbringings and therefore differing opinions on things like how long to go between washing pants, or switching out your wardrobe with the season...so my question is about bedding and the age old art of being comfortable while sleeping.

I love my big fluffy duvet. I grew up with duvets and comforters and never switched them out with the season. My parents always kept their home quite cool so maybe this wasn't a problem growing up, but I am generally a cold person so I keep the air conditioning at a minimum and therefore some nights my big fluffy duvet is just too warm! Not to mention I have a memory foam mattress topper and memory foam pillows- and apparently memory foam retains heat, compounding the issue.

My big marshmallow of a bed

So my question is- how do you deal with this issue in the summer? Do you switch out the duvet for a cooler-rated one? Do you replace the entire kit'n kaboodle with a quilt or blanket? I am not sure what makes the most sense for me as some nights I am still pulling that big duvet up to my chin and the next night I'll be kicking it off! I also don't really want to go through the effort of storing my duvet somewhere all winter. I think I am just interested in what other people do with different seasons and bedding :). Spill the beans.

Also- how often do you wash your jeans??

  1. Honestly, I can't really remember what I did growing up with bedding and switching it out. I know I had more blankets on the bed in the winter because my room was located in the freezing side of the house, but other than that, no recollection.

As for now, we take the duvet off for the summer. During the winter we have a top sheet, a quilt and a duvet. For the summer, just the sheet and quit. Once it starts getting a little cooler again, I will pull out an afghan to use on my side since Dan is usually still warm. We also don't have A/C so it gets quite warm during the summer months.

As for washing my jeans, I wash them when they're dirty. Or if I feel it's been too long. :)

  3. I ran into this situation last night. I threw the duvet on the floor and just slept with a sheet. Then I woke up at 3 a.m. and wanted a blanket so I reached over and pulled it up. Voila!

  4. Oh, this whole jeans washing thing is silly to me. I can't believe people are saying you should never wash your jeans. I was mine when they're dirty. That's usually 2-3 wears.

  5. I grew up like you, using a duvet all the time. But it's just too hot in the summers here, so I switch my duvet out to a sheet and a nice cotton blanket.

And I wash my jeans after 2-3 wears too. Honestly, I only wash anything after about 2-3 wears, unless it's got stains on it. Call me a slob, whatevs.
